The Arctic Coalition is a collection Alaskan and nationwide organizations that support responsible energy development in and off the coast of Alaska and is calling on the Obama Administration to include the Arctic in its forthcoming offshore leasing plan.
The draft program, revealed in March, allows for the possibility of lease sales to be held for federally controlled tracts in the Beaufort (2020) and Chukchi (2022) seas. Despite the support of local communities and people across Alaska, activist groups continue to wage an aggressive campaign to have those areas removed from the final schedule.
Following the launch of its first advertisement in September, the Coalition was delighted to welcome Arctic Iñupiat Offshore (AIO) as a member on October 24. AIO is a joint venture between the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation and six North Slope village corporations and was created to allow native communities to invest directly in energy-related projects in and near their areas.
As a part of its membership AIO, unveiled a new advertisement aimed at highlighting local North Slope communities’ perspectives on energy development in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas. Another Coalition member, the Arctic Energy Center also plans an additional ad run which will explore the national security ramifications of offshore energy development in the Arctic, in early November.
