Earlier this afternoon Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan introduced the Offshore Production and Energizing National Security Alaska Act of 2017 (OPENS Alaska Act). The legislation aims to open up offshore Arctic waters for oil and gas drilling and reverse a moratorium imposed by President Obama at the end of 2016.
In response, Arctic Energy Center Spokesperson Oliver Williams, issued the following statement:
“President Obama’s midnight ban on offshore development killed one of the industries most critical to the Arctic’s future, a self-inflicted wound with grievous ramifications for Alaska’s economy.
“Interest in the Arctic offshore energy has picked up over the last six months. America should capitalize on that momentum by giving industry the option to access more of the Arctic’s huge resource potential. Hopefully this legislation will start that process.”
