Earlier this afternoon, Rep. Dave Brat introduced the Outer Continental Shelf Energy Access Now Act of 2017 (OCEAN Act). The legislation aims to reverse the offshore exploration moratorium put in place by the last administration and ensure future moratoriums undergo a more stringent review process before they are enacted. Sens. Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy introduced companion legislation in the Senate.
In response, Arctic Energy Center Spokesperson Oliver Williams, issued the following statement:
“This is the second bill aiming to open up Arctic waters to energy development, in less than a month. With an Executive Order expected on Friday, the momentum to overrule the Obama administration’s unwarranted and self-defeating ban, is steadily building.
It’s essential we address the moratorium soon. Building out the infrastructure needed to develop Arctic offshore resources will likely take more than a decade; we need to start the process today, so that we can be ready tomorrow. This bill is another step in the right direction.”
